On Thursday, the Philadelphia Flyers confirmed that they have bought out R.J. Umberger, which was a decision that didn't need waivers, as Umberger had a no-movement clause in his contract, which allowed him to skip the wire altogether.
The 2016 season for the 34-year old was mired in the press box as a healthy scratch (with a dash of injury), as he only played in 39 games in total, scoring 2 goals and 11 points and was not relevant to the pool at all. It would seem like a long shot that he would have much relevance in the pool again, if he was to even find a job in the NHL again.
The Flyers are set to save $3 million in cap space with this move, as the buyout cap hit will only work out to be $1.6 million from his $4.6 million cap hit, if he was to remain on the roster. Simple math, right?
