Blackhawks Import Finn

The Chicago Blackhawks made a splash in the free agent market already and it's only May! They picked up Finnish keeper Antti Niemi from the Lahti Pelicans in the Finnish Elite League on Monday and he'll challenge Nikolai Khabibulin for the main job in the Chicago crease.

Niemi turned out to be one of the more highly sought-after players this summer, along the same lines as Fabian Brunnstrom from Sweden. He brings some pretty good size to the Chicago net, which was one of the big plus points of the keeper.

Niemi, 24, has posted some very good numbers in Finland, posting a record of 26-6-14 this past season in the Finnish Elite League. Not too shabby. Curiosity picks up to see how well his skill will translate to the North American game.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed right away, but the Blackhawks will not suffer with this signing against the cap.
