Have the years of inconsistent play begun to pay off for the St. Louis Blues. Yesterday, it was reported it was Lars Eller, their 2007 first round pick, signed on with the club. On Tuesday, 2005 first round choice, T.J. Oshie, signed his entry-level deal after finishing his university career with North Dakota, which included three straight visits to the Frozen Four.
The Blues have the potential to have six first round picks from the past four summers in their line-up for next season. In 2006 & 2007, they had two first rounders each year and only defenseman Ian Cole (their second first rounder in 2007) has yet to sign with the club. Erik Johnson (1st overall in 2006) has already earned himself a full time job with the club and Marek Schwarz (30th overall in 2003) has seen sporadic time with the Blues. Also waiting in the wings is Patrik Berglund (25th overall in 2006).
Having that many young players may not earn a lot of wins, but their experience will be valuable if some or all were to make the team.
