Big news in Colorado on Thursday, as their number one goalie has been put on the shelf for at least a week.
Reto Berra is scheduled to get the start on Thursday night in Ottawa, as Semyon Varlamov has been placed on the Injured Reserve with what is believed to be a groin injury. There were rumblings in the early parts of the day, that the 26-year old Russian keeper may miss this start to a small groin problem, but being placed on the IR turns out to be big news, as that means, he'll miss at least a week.
This also comes at a rough time for the Avs, who have started the season, 1-2-1 in their first four games. Not exactly the best of starts to a season where the expectation is so high.
In three starts this season, Varlamov is winless, which has meant no points for Benson in the hockey pool to this point. Benson sits in 23rd spot, losing out the tie-breaker to Ryan for 22nd spot and not being in the basement, and he is now without his 1st round pick, where he took Varlamov 18th overall.
This has not been the best of starts for Benson, who has had below-average skater games played to this point in the season and slightly above-average minutes from his goalies. Certainly, the goalie minutes will take a hit, to go along with his skater games, so it might be a while before he works his way out of the basement... and out of the running for the Olli.
