Today (Tuesday), should be the last day where anyone should be considering waivers for their injured players, but it certainly won't be the last day that some teams will rue the fact that they cannot get rid of some of their now minor league talent that they have on their pool team.
The last cuts to NHL rosters before they have to be finalized with the league is at 3pm MT and there should be some waiver movement, some more demotions and maybe even a trade or two. With only one more sleep until opening night, teams have to be prepared.
This is the same for our pool teams, as the preseason waivers have been used quite well this year, mostly by those who are reading the blog. It really does pay to keep up with the pool on this page, I think.
On Monday, one more waiver claim came down the pipe, as Allan decided to drop Jeff Skinner, who suffered a concussion in the last preseason game on the weekend and he decided to pick up Kris Versteeg of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Versteeg had 12 goals and 36 points last season between Florida and Chicago and has been the target of some trade rumours over the Summer, as the Blackhawks struggled with some of their salary cap math. With Chicago dealing Nick Leddy on the weekend, it should quiet down those rumours, but if the Blackhawks find themselves in a bad way before too long, I'm sure those rumours will kick up again.
Versteeg, I am expecting to have the same kind of year as he did last year, having projected him in the 35-point bracket for the 2015 season. Despite being injury prone, Skinner was still projected at about 65 points, which is nowhere near his actual talent level should project him at, but you have to incorporate the bad with the good when doing these projections.
This looks like a fair loss for Allan, but at least he should get a better compliment of NHL games with Versteeg in tow. If the Blackhawks decide to move the veteran winger, there is a chance he could find a team that would give him more ice-time and possibly be a better fit for him, as an individual.
I don't expect any more action on the waiver wire, but stay tuned to the blog, just in case...
