The official word came down from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night, as the scheduled shoulder surgery for defenseman Olli Maatta will end his regular season and likely his playoffs as well.
With a premature finish to the season, Maatta's season ends with 20 games under his belt in the 2015 season, scoring 1 goal and 8 assists. This would be a pretty big disappointment, considering his 25-point projection before the season started. Considering his cancer treatment and and now his surgery, Maatta was on pace to hit his projection, but that isn't to be this year.
Maatta was Cam's 11th round draft pick this year, taking him 232nd overall, as the run on defensemen was exceptionally quick this season. All indications now will suggest that Cam will drop the Finnish blueliner at the Week Eighteen Waiver Draft, which isn't too far away now.
Even with Maatta on the shelf for the better part of the season, to date, his team still sits in 5th place, only 7 points out of 3rd place, well situated in the money race.
