Leafs Make Final Cuts

The Maple Leafs cut both forward Boyd Deveraux and defenseman Staffan Kronwall from the roster today, having them pass through waivers, bringing their supposed roster down to 23 including two injured players, Nikolai Kulemin and Jeff Finger. According to the Leafs' website, Kulemin is the only one on the IR, while Finger is day-to-day with a foot injury.

Something in their roster doesn't look quite right, as they only have 11 forwards on the roster, by my calculations, so they will be carrying some extra defense from game-to-game. If there are any corrections to this, I will be sure to write it all down in an update.

Another thing to consider, they will be down to 10 forwards to start the season, with Ryan Hollweg suspended for those games as well. Curiosity remains.

With buyouts and such, the Leafs are fairly limited to what they could spend this year. Their current 23-man roster only gives them a salary cap hit of $45.4 million, which puts them in good shape, but they do have $1.5 million in buyouts from Darcy Tucker and Andrew Raycroft.

For pool consideration, you may want to take late gambles on Mikhail Grabovski and Jonas Frogren this year, as they will likely stick with the team all year. A deep pool could make these two valuable sleepers.

Watch for an update on the LEafs, if more moves or roster spots are clarified.
