I kind of debated with myself about making this post up, since Niklas Grossman isn't really a hockey pool-type player, but I thought, "why not?"
The Philadelphia Flyers have been in the market for a defenseman since the announcement that Chris Pronger was not going to return, but they knew full well that they were not going to get another Pronger, because there just isn't one out there. In Grossman, they do take care of a portion of his defensive responsibilities, but that's about where it stops. Grossman's stability for a more-than-reasonable cap hit, plus the option of making him a rental by letting him go in July is very attractive for the Flyers.
Without going into a big spell about the Flyers' cap situation, they have plenty of room, thanks to the long-term injury to Pronger, whose cap hit is much larger than Grossman's, so they'll be in good shape here.
The Stars get a couple of very useful draft picks in this deal, which should help their rebuilding, while maintaining a good portion of their defensive depth. It's a pretty good deal for the Stars, who will get a fresh new look for the 2013 season, by all indications.
