On Friday afternoon, the Colorado Avalanche announced that they have re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Kyle Cumiskey, giving the 24-year old rearguard a new 1-year deal, reportedly worth $708,750.
Cumiskey had an injury-shortened 2011 season, thanks to concussion problems, which limited him to only 18 games. In those 18 games, he did manage to pick up 8 points (1 goal and 7 assists).
Cumiskey has been deemed healthy and is ready to go for training camp in a couple of weeks, which is a positive sign for himself and the club. The on-going concern will be how vulnerable he will be to another concussion, which should be noted on your list as you're picking players for your pool team. Cumiskey has the ability to break out, if he can stay healthy, but as a defenseman, the reward may not be worth the risk.
Also, with this signing, it means that there is going to be a big log jam on the Avalanche blueline, as the club now has eight regular defensemen signed and ready to go, not to mention a couple of key young players waiting their turn on the depth chart, so the players will have to work extra hard to get ice-time this season.
