The New York Islanders were likely looking at some of the long contract signings and holdouts that have been going on among other teams and their key restricted free agents and they made sure that their centrepiece was not going to go that way next Summer. The Islanders will announce the signing of John Tavares to a new 6-year, $33 million contract extension on Thursday, which won't kick in until the 2013 season, but it does avoid free agency negotiations next Summer, when Tavares' entry-level contract expires.
The new deal works out to be a cap hit of $5.5 million per season, which is banking on being somewhat of a bargain, as Tavares has some very awesome potential in his bag and if the Islanders continue to improve their roster over the next couple of years, Tavares could be a very big player making moderate money in the NHL.
In the 2011 season, Tavares led the Islanders in pool scoring with 29 goals and 38 assists in 79 games, which ranked him 27th among all forwards in the NHL and he is only getting better. Today, I have Tavares ranked high enough in my pool projections to be a late-1st round pick in the hockey pool and getting him in the 2nd or 3rd round could be a huge bargain for any pool team.
