On Thursday evening, the Winnipeg Jets looked to round out their roster with the signing of unrestricted free agent forward Kyle Wellwood. The veteran centre signed a 1-year deal, reportedly worth $700,000.
Wellwood split the 2011 season between Atlant Moscow of the KHL and the San Jose Sharks, playing 35 NHL games, scoring 5 goals and 8 assists in that stretch. He will be looking towards a top six job in camp, but he will have some competition, to which he may lose out and fill in the third line centre role.
For right now, I would be projecting Wellwood to pick up about 30 points this season, putting him in the middle of the pack on the team and not likely a good pick up in your pool draft. There is certainly some potential in his game and his competition for a top six job isn't necessarily consistent, so he could be a good mid-season pick-up, if needed.
