Jackets Extend Umberger

The Columbus Blue Jackets announced on Wednesday morning that they have signed forward R. J. Umberger to a brand new contract extension, reportedly for 5 years and worth $26 million.  Umberger, 29, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2012 season, but now he'll have a cap hit of $4.6 million starting in the 2013 season, a slight raise from the $3.75 million cap hit he currently has this season.

Umberger is a solid winger with good size and decent hands, he finished with 57 points (25 goals and 32 assists) in all 82 games for the Blue Jackets in 2011, ranking him 77th in pool scoring, 53rd among all forwards.  With some improvements made to the Blue Jackets up front, there should be some higher expectations for a winger like Umberger, as shown in my projections this season for him, where I have him at 65 points.
