The Washington Capitals are flying atop of the NHL standings again this season and you could argue that their depth has improved some, thanks to a guy like Andre Burakovsky, who has posted 11 goals and 29 points in 52 games this season, working at a very reasonable clip.
Unfortunately for the 22-year old Austrian, his regular season will take a pretty big hit down the stretch, as he has suffered a significant hand injury this week, which is expected to keep him out of the lineup for upwards of six weeks. The team says that he is fortunate that he won't have to have surgery on the injured hand, but it will take some time to heal.
This is indeed a huge blow in the money race, as Stacey C. is right there with the big teams, heading into Saturday's action in 6th place, only 8 points out of 3rd place. The loss of Burakovsky could be in the range of 10-to-15 points before he's back, taking into account his scoring pace and the possible number of games he'll miss. It might mean a slow drip down the standings, unless there is some real gains made by his Waiver Draft picks, like Philip Danault in Montreal.
