The Tampa Bay Lightning were very keen on moving out some salary on trade deadline day, as they are looking ahead to the Summer, when players like Ondrej Palat, Tyler Johnson and Jonathan Drouin hit restricted free agency. On top of the list was veteran forward Valtteri Filppula, who has another year at $5 million on the books.
The Bolts were able to shift that cap hit to Philadelphia, along with a couple of draft picks, taking on soon-to-be unrestricted free agent defenseman Mark Streit, who the Flyers were certainly intent on selling at the deadline.
The Flyers get a decent depth winger in this deal, which could come into play at the expansion draft this year, one way or another, through required exposure or a player that might be worth holding onto.
Filppula's stop means that Jeremy sees his player get a change of scenery, which might be able to boost his numbers, but the Flyers haven't been very impressive this year, hence their selling situation, so it's hard to think that he'll improve their fortunes or his own.
Scott is holding onto Streit this year, but his story isn't done with this post, so I'll hold off on him for right now.
