|3rd Round Draft Pick|
The Detroit Red Wings are now coming to the conclusion that the playoffs are not in their future and their long streak is coming to an end. The Florida Panthers have cashed in on their lack of success, gaining a rental forward in Thomas Vanek, to help with their stretch drive. The Red Wings retained some salary, but gained a rugged defenseman and a 3rd round draft pick in the process.
The Panthers get some scoring potential in Vanek and it gives them some added depth in their forward ranks. The price tag is certainly right for this add, with the Red Wings taking on half of what is remaining on his $2.6 million salary. This is a good rental move, indeed.
For Kristy & Don, this is their fourth player dealt at the deadline and it still won't help their cause too much, as they are still safely in 20th place.
