Ankle Surgery Ends Lehner's Season
The ankle problems for Robin Lehner have been pretty well documented this year and the team has now opted to go with the surgery route this week, trying to make sure that their current (and hopefully future) number one goalie will be ready for training camp in September.
Lehner has already undergone the procedure and his recovery should be well within the next six months, giving him plenty of time for rehab and strength training, with the intention that he'll be playing 65+ games next season.
His season finishes with only 21 appearances under his belt, winning 5 games, earning 1 shutout and picking up 1 assist for 13 points this year. The numbers were not great this year, but it should also be taken into consideration that the Sabres are still in a rebuilding mode and still have some room to grow here.
In the pool this year, Lehner was taken in the draft by Stacey C., way up in the 2nd round, before going down with an injury in the first game of the season. He was then dropped in the Week Nine Waiver Draft, picked up again by Derek & Dan in Week Eighteen. Since then, he was good for 8 points and 8 PIM for the goon squad, which made him into a reasonable pick-up for them this year.
