The Carolina Hurricanes want to have first crack at signing rough & tumble forward Darcy Hordichuk, sending a 2009 fifth round pick to the Predators to do so. Hordichuk, 27, played in 45 games for Nashville and registered 3 points and accumulated 60 penalty minutes.
The Predators don't look to re-sign Hordichuk, so getting a pick instead of giving up on him for nothing is a pretty good deal.

The Hurricanes were not done with just the trade, as they announced the signing of potential restricted free agent defenseman, Tim Gleason, to a 4-year deal worth $11 million. Gleason, also considered a tough guy in Carolina, played in 80 games and registered 19 points (3G, 16A). He's been raising his profile with the Hurricanes, as they have finally been the team to give him a solid chance at quality playing time. Now, he's been rewarded for his hard work. He would be an outside choice in a small pool draft, but he would most certainly fit in a deep one.

The signing of Gleason adds a fourth defender to their almost-certain player list for next season. It now brings the Carolina totals to 16 players at an approximate cap hit of $41.8 million. That would leave about $14-$15 million left to use for the other 7 active players.
