Mayers Moves to Maple Leaf Land

Instead of making a subtraction on Thursday, like everyone was beginning to expect, the Leafs made an addition. For a third round pick on Saturday, the Leafs acquired forward Jamal Mayers from the St. Louis Blues.

The rugged right winger is a good add to any team, as he brings some veteran experience to the table, along with some great penalty killing skill and a nose for the net. In 80 games last season, Mayers tallied 27 points (12G, 15A), finishing just outside the top 300 in pool scoring.

At only $1.333 million against the cap, he also comes at a very reasonable price for the team. Toronto now has 17 regular players at a cap cost of $41.7 million, which isn't sitting too bad. St. Louis, on the other hand, has some salary cap issues and Mayers was certainly one of the more expendible players. They've now dropped to $40 million against the cap with only 13 regular players. Team updates will likely follow in July.
