The Canucks announced on Wednesday that they claimed Kyle Wellwood off the waiver wire and will likely make a qualifying offer to the potential restricted free agent in the coming days to lock him up come July 1st.
Wellwood finished the year with 21 points (9G, 12A) in 59 games with the Maple Leafs, which was considered very disappointing in Toronto. Wellwood only earned $875,000 last season, which will likely see a mild raise, despite his low output.
The major concern when talking about Wellwood is his health. A groin injury kept him out of the line up for 23 games, on and off, through the year. His status for the upcoming season is still in the air, health-wise.
