More bad news on the Carolina Hurricanes front, as the team is going to be patient with Cam Ward and his upper-body injury, making sure that they don't rush him back to the line-up in a losing season.
The Hurricanes have said today that they will let doctors observe Ward for the next two weeks before making any decision to the playing future of their franchise keeper. The upper-body injury has been categorized as a back injury and doctors are going to wait until it settles down before they examine him further. Of course, the word surgery is anxiously being banded about and it could be the last-ditch, season-ending idea that the Hurricanes might have to consider.
Despite his long-term injury this season, Ward has appeared in 41 games for Carolina and has amassed a record of 14-21-5. He's got a GAA of 2.74, which ranks 27th in the league and a save percentage of .913, which ranks respectably in 18th.
The Hurricanes are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games, thanks to some great play from Ward and some other key members and this injury news should all but seal the fate of the Hurricanes being in (or near) the basement of the Eastern Conference.
With Ward being back around the same time the Draft held it's second Waiver Draft, his presence on the list was hard to ignore. Just ask Wayne, who decided to take Ward on as a gamble to help lift him over the top of everyone in the standings. For three weeks, it was an excellent move, as Wayne took advantage of Ward's great play after the Waiver Draft and he was rewarded with a climb up to 2nd place in the standings.
Wayne's team has been hot, other than Ward, so it will be interesting to see what the impact of the loss of Ward will be in the end... and for how long.
