This is not the best of times for the Montreal Canadiens, as they have fallen out of the playoff picture and it could be likely that they may stay below the top eight with this news. The team has learned that Mike Cammalleri has suffered an MCL injury and it will likely keep the team's top goal-scorer out of the line-up for 6-to-8 weeks. Since we have started Week Nineteen in the season, eight weeks would theoretically be through the end of the year (of 26 weeks), but we do have the two-week break, which could see Cammalleri back in action for the last week and the last push of the year.
Cammalleri currently ranks second on the Canadiens in terms of scoring with 48 points in 56 games this season, but his 26 goals are far and away the best numbers on the team and the Habs are desperate for offense as it is right now.
This injury will likely impact the decision of what direction the team wants to go in at the trade deadline, deciding on whether or not to make a push for the playoffs. If they decide to make that push, they will have to go out and get some offense to supplement the time missed by Cammalleri and maybe even a bit more on top of that.
The Cammalleri injury has made the race for last place a little bit more interesting, as John P. has lost another player and only sits 2 points ahead of Trevor B. for last, so this could help him to be the real basement dweller. It's been a long while since we had a good race for last place, so hang onto your hats... it's a doozy of a first step.
On the Sheet, Cammalleri fell victim to being in the same box as Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin, who are much better picks and it shows in their numbers.
