I get the feeling that the Matt Cullen deal isn't the only thing that the Senators want to accomplish before the trade deadline, as they have placed Jonathan Cheechoo on waivers on Friday. I'm not sure how this will actually affect Cheechoo heading into the Olympic Break, especially since the NHL roster freeze does come into effect on Friday afternoon. I'll try and post an update when I get it.
It hasn't been a great season for Cheechoo in Ottawa, especially not the bounce back year that some were somewhat expecting from him. In 61 games this season, he's only picked up 5 goals and 14 points. That's a fairly horrible scoring rate for a $3 million cap hit. There is a lot to be said about a guy who used to play with Joe Thornton in San Jose, don't you think? It's hard to imagine what the Senators are going to do with him, especially since I would expect him to clear waivers.
Six teams in the Sheet pool are probably wondering the same thing, but if you have Cheechoo on your pool team, you're probably not doing as well as you should be. In Box 21, Cheechoo's 14 points ranks 14th out of 15 players, 46 points behind box leader, Tomas Plekanec. Yeah, a trade is likely going to help, but it could already be too late.
Quick update: a player placed on waivers prior to the roster freeze taking effect can get claimed and will have to move, even after the freeze has taken effect. (Article 13.15 of the CBA)
