On Wednesday, the Anaheim Ducks made their decision in regards to Nick Boynton, who cleared waivers this week, by sending him down to the AHL, where he'll play for the Manitoba Moose. That should clear up a bit of cap space for the time being and may also give them a chance to get rid of him on re-entry waivers, which would only cost them half of the remainder of his deal, which will expire at the end of this seaosn.
This is actually a bit of Draft news, but its so minor, I'm just throwing it in with the Sheet news. John B.'s new second goaltender, Antti Niemi, missed sitting on the bench as Cristobel Huet's back-up, with a bit of an illness. The Blackhawks did a quick call-up of prospect, Joe Fallon, for last night's game, but then immediately sent him back down to the AHL, as Niemi should be good to play back-up in the next game.
An interesting quote I read from Robert Nilsson this morning said that he wasn't surprised that he was a healthy scratch last night against the Flyers, because he had to terrible games leading up to the scratch. That's the kind of honesty you don't hear much throughout the league nowadays, but there it is. The Oilers did win their second straight game without Nilsson, so they might not be in a big hurry to dress him right away.
The Flyers decided to give Ray Emery the entire night off against the Oilers, not having him dress at all as back-up. Instead, Brian Boucher, who has been a constant healthy scratch since the re-emergence of Emery, was the back-up, while Michael Leighton made the start. There was a rumour out there that Emery was going to miss this game because of a groin injury, but the Flyers were quick to squash that, saying that they were just giving him the night off.
The news is not positive for Coyotes defenseman, Kurt Sauer, who has been dealing with an upper-body injury, which does relate to the head & neck. Sauer has not seen any improvement during the season and the team is remaining highly doubtful that he'll play again this season. Sauer was injured on opening night for the Coyotes and has not seen any action since. I think we should all consider him done.
The season has now ended for Toronto's Mike Komisarek, who will now undergo season-ending shoulder surgery this week in Alabama. Komisarek has been battling a shoulder injury for quite some time now, keeping himself listed as out day-to-day, but the shoulder was not seeing any improvement and he will now forgo the Olympics and try to get himself healthy again for training camp in September. Recovery time on this shoulder surgery is 4-to-6 months, so he should be okay there.
