Avs Re-Sign Hunwick

The Avalanche have had an interesting draft weekend, picking up one of the best players in the pool, trading away one of their top defensemen and now re-signing a potential restricted free agent defenseman, Matt Hunwick, to a new 1-year deal. The deal is said to be worth $1.55 million for the year and the 26-year old defender will be an unrestricted free agent after the deal is complete.

Hunwick was not terribly productive in the 2011 season, not quite living up to some of his sleeper predictions, only scoring 1 goal and 12 assists in 74 games between Boston and Colorado. Hunwick was ranked 129th among all defensemen in scoring, down only one position from his 2010 ranking.

Salary CapThe new-look Avalanche table above has seen some changes and the signing of Hunwick only strikes off one question out of many in this off-season. Currently, the Avalanche have nine forwards, four defensemen and a buyout on the books for only $28.8 million, which is just a shade less than $20 million away from the salary cap floor.

The Avalanche currently rank 29th in projected cap totals for the coming season and they may be a team that can help other teams that are struggling with the cap ceiling before the season starts.
