Hunwick was not terribly productive in the 2011 season, not quite living up to some of his sleeper predictions, only scoring 1 goal and 12 assists in 74 games between Boston and Colorado. Hunwick was ranked 129th among all defensemen in scoring, down only one position from his 2010 ranking.

The new-look Avalanche table above has seen some changes and the signing of Hunwick only strikes off one question out of many in this off-season. Currently, the Avalanche have nine forwards, four defensemen and a buyout on the books for only $28.8 million, which is just a shade less than $20 million away from the salary cap floor.
The Avalanche currently rank 29th in projected cap totals for the coming season and they may be a team that can help other teams that are struggling with the cap ceiling before the season starts.
