In Tanguay, the Flames keep a talented offensive player in their ranks, one that will likely continue to play with Jarome Iginla in a playmaking role. Tanguay finished the 2011 season with 22 goals and 47 assists (69 points) in 79 games, ranking him 40th in pool scoring, 25th among all forwards. With the Flames desperate for offense, keeping Tanguay around had to happen, so the team made room and got him signed.

A quick peek at what the Flames are looking like after this signing, you can see where Tanguay fits in, the elimination of Regehr from the defensive column and the addition of Henrik Karlsson from the last team update on the Pool Outlook. Chris Butler has yet to be signed to a new deal, while Paul Byron will need to make the team to be added to this table, so the Regehr trade hasn't impacted this table yet.
What does this do to the salary cap number for the Flames? The team above of 12 forwards, three defense, two goalies and a buyout now come in at a projected annual total of $55.6 million for 2012, which leaves them with $8.7 million for the remaining defensemen that they desperately need, with another forward as a possibility as well. It's not a great deal of space, but the Flames do have two top end defensemen to start with at least.
