The rumours about the last days of Ilya Bryzgalov in Phoenix were true. Bryzgalov reportedly priced himself right out of the market for the Coyotes, which seeming stemmed from the impending rumours that the Coyotes would move back to Winnipeg, but even with the Thrashers going instead, Bryzgalov was not going to stick around and grow with the team.
Thankfully for the Coyotes, they caught wind of this in good time, thus were able to move his rights to the Flyers for a soon-to-be free agent forward and a couple of draft picks. If Bryzgalov hit the open market, Phoenix would have been left on the lurch with nothing, so a deal like this makes a lot of sense.
For the Flyers, they get just under a month to negotiate their way with a fairly top-end goaltender, but with cap numbers the way they are in Philadelphia (nothing official from my end anyway), it could be a bit of a stretch, but one likely worth taking. Trading futures for something right now seems to be the motif of the Flyers of late, but they have put together some strong teams lately, which lacked goaltending, so this could be a big positive for them.
