The Calgary Flames announced on Monday afternoon that they have re-signed their back-up goalie Henrik Karlsson to a new 2-year deal, worth $1.725 million over the two seasons, which works out to be a $862,500 cap hit per season. The 27-year old keeper was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, but now has some job security over the next couple of years, pending training camp results.
Karlsson did not have a pool worthy season in Calgary in 2011, winning only 4 contests for 8 points, mostly because of the high minutes Miikka Kiprusoff took in the regular season, limiting Karlsson to only 837 minutes worth of action (17 appearances).
The news of the projected salary cap number and this signing couldn't have come at a better time, especially with a lot of concern about how the Flames will fit under the cap are lingering. Currently, I have the Flames with 11 forwards, four defense, two goalies and a buyout on the books for $56.1 million. With the unofficial cap number set at $64 million, that leaves $7.9 million for four to six players, which is not a great deal of money, especially when the team wants to re-sign Alex Tanguay.
