Afternoon Player Notes in the Draft (Jan 1)

After the Washington Capitals took to the ice for a Monday morning skate, the team says that defenseman Matt Niskanen will not travel with the team to Carolina for their game on Tuesday night, as he has tweaked something in the upper-body and he's currently listed as day-to-day.  The Capitals won't play again until Sunday, so he'll have some time to rest and recover, so it would only be one game missed, if all went well.

This isn't the news that Stacey C. was looking for to start the new calendar year, but there it is.  His 20th place team starts 59 points out of the money to start January and Niskanen has only been okay this season, picking up 11 points in 27 games to date.

It sounds like Zach Parise is now officially good to go for the Minnesota Wild. The Wild placed forward Zack Mitchell on waivers for the purpose of reassignment on Monday and at Noon ET Tuesday, he'll either be cleared or claimed, which will make room for Parise to make his season debut, at home to the Florida Panthers later on that evening.

Brian took a flyer on Parise at the Waiver Draft and has waited four weeks to have him activated, which isn't nearly as bad as when Neil drafted Parise in the 6th round, only to find out that he'd need back surgery a couple of weeks later.  Brian's team has fallen hard, due to injury, but this return is a step in the right direction.
