Gonchar Suffers a Concussion

The ugly c-word comes back around again and it's Sergei Gonchar who becomes the latest recipient of the condition, having to leave Saturday night's game against the Lightning in the second period.  Not a great deal about the play itself was disclosed, nor about the seriousness of the injury.  Gonchar will have to miss at least the next week worth of action, because a concussion was diagnosed and that is the minimum for the ailment, but afterwards, it will likely be touch and go for a Senators team that is way too close to being mathematically eliminated for Gonchar's return to really matter.

The Senators did not get a good return from their free agent signing in the Summer, as Gonchar has been in and out of their line-up too often to make a considerable difference this season. In 67 games, Gonchar has 7 goals and 20 assists for 27 points, which is currently good enough for 282nd in pool scoring, down from 125th in 2010. The Russian blueliner is now working himself towards the injury prone list, with some pretty poor health seasons behind him now.

ImplicationsGonchar belongs to Peter H.'s pool team this season, a team that has really struggled to find any offense in Week Twenty-Four, currently sitting in the Basement Dweller's spot with only 6 points in the week, as we only have about five games left to go in the schedule.  Not very good news at all.  Peter also sits15th overall, well out of any contention.

Since the Senators are not in the playoff race, Gonchar's inclusion on the playoff pool sheet is purely cosmetic.
