Can't say I saw this one coming. The Philadelphia Flyers moved to get a little bit more mobile on their blueline, while the headline grabbing Tampa Bay Lightning moved to get a lot more gritty, while trying to fill the opened gap on the blueline.
The Flyers picking up Matt Carle in essence for Steve Eminger is a definite upgrade on the blueline. Carle has so much upside, it's surprising that the Lightning were going to let go of him.
On the other hand, the Lightning getting Steve Downie is a match made in Public Relations heaven/hell. Downie is a rough & tumble player who did grab some headlines at the beginning of last season, when he railroaded Dean McAmmond in the pre-season. Any press should be good press in Tampa. Also in Tampa, Downie should get some big league playing time, as he's been moved down to the minors in Philly.
It's an interesting deal, but the early winner here is Philadelphia, just because Carle could be the catalyst for some more potent offense for the Flyers.
