The Devils wanted to add some size down the middle of their line-up, so they announced that they have signed free agent centre, Rob Niedermayer to a new deal. The terms and financial details were not actually announced in the release, but I would have to believe it would be for a single season. I would wager that his salary cap hit will fall into the range of $1 to $1.3 million for that single season, but that is far from being confirmed.
Before this signing, I have figured out that the Devils camp roster was worth $57.2 million against the cap for 31 players, so that leaves the team in pretty good shape. The Devils also had the signing of Andrew Peters announced today, so there are a couple of new additions to the chart that will have to be accounted for.
Last season, Niedermayer had 21 points (14G, 7A) in 79 games for the Ducks, which isn't too bad for a third liner. He'll be getting third line duties, if not fourth, in Jersey, so I would expect the same numbers again, if not a little lower. I'm thinking it would have to be a pretty deep draft to get down to the 260th ranked forward last season, especially with new rookies to be had.
