If Teemu Selanne is to catch a break this season, he's going right back to the Injured Reserve with something broken in his body. Oh wait, that's exactly what's happening, as he took a puck to the face against Boston on Wednesday night, fracturing his jaw bone. Coach Carlyle said that he expects Selanne to be out of the line-up again for anywhere between days and weeks, he was rather unclear. I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see Selanne in a full face shield in a week or two, but that's just speculation on my part.
Selanne has only managed to play in 30 games this season for Anaheim, scoring 16 goals and 7 assists in the process. We're all hoping that this new injury is one he can play through, especially since he is such a valuable member of the Ducks and the scoring community.
Selanne came into the week ranked 179th in pool scoring this season, which was down from his finishing position of 107th in 2009. I'm beginning to wonder how much resolve Selanne has as a 39-year old to come back for another season.
Timing is everything here, as the second round of the Waiver Draft has commenced (the completion of the first round follow-up is coming) and Chris might be looking to make a move here to drop Selanne from his Draft team. Selanne has missed a bit of time already and is poised to miss some more. The only question is how much time does Chris think he's going to miss or whether or not he even cares?
In the Sheet pool, Selanne is a member of Box 4, where he was taken five times this season. His 23 points this season isn't great comparison to the top scorer in the box, Ryan Kesler, who has 41 points this season. That shoudl be worth a trade this year.
