Prospect Tournament Names Surface

Thanks to the rookie camps and tournaments, I can finally get some sort of hockey news to quench my early season thirst. Sure, I'm watching football and baseball on TV, but it's hockey that I really want to know about. So, I thought I would surf the Traverse City games and pick out some of the names and highlights for us poolies, in case you cared.

The Stars brass were impressed on Saturday by some of their youth, as they beat the St. Louis Blues' rookies 4-3 in Traverse City. Of course, the name on everyone's lips for Dallas is Fabian Brunnstrom.  According to their game report, Brunnstrom was a little frustrated by the size of North American ice, but Stars management was still impressed by his play, which is good news for poolies looking to make a steal with Brunnstrom.  You might still be able to check off his name in your draft or Selection Sheet.

Blue Jackets prospect, Jakub Voracek, turned some heads with his shootout goal on Saturday, as the Jackets beat the Minnesota Wild, 4-3 from the shootout. Voracek, 19, will be looking to get a spot on the Blue Jackets roster finally, and bring some of his offensive talent to his pro club.  His name will continue to pop up throughout training camp and rightly so.  He'll be a good name to keep track of for your pool.

Defending Cup champs, Detroit, beat the Rangers 4-0 in their Traverse City opener and the big name from that game was 2006 second round pick, Cory Emmerton.  Emmerton, a forward, scored a pair of goals and added an assist in the game, which seemed to turn some heads.  Unfortunately for Emmerton, there is very little space on the big club for him to breakthrough, so a quick jump to the AHL is likely.  If the Red Wings really wanted his skill this season, I'm sure they could find a spot for him, so keep him pencilled in on your list for now.

For now, those are the three names that jumped out in all of the game reviews, there will be some more rookie games going on in the next week, which should keep our attention until camp comes.
