Flames Get More Depth

Starting the Canadian tour in Calgary, where the Flames were doing more to sign up more depth over the last couple weeks than anything else. Good thing too, as they really blew their wad with some of the early July signings that they managed to pull off. Still questions remain as to what else is about to happen for the team in Calgary, because cap-wise, they may be pushing the envelope a little too far.

The Flames have added some more depth to the regular playing lines in Fredrik Sjostrom, Nigel Dawes and Adam Pardy, since my last team update, so the cap numbers for the table above have skewed a little bit. The team listed above, 19 players, now sits at a cap hit of about $54.4 million (rounded up), which doesn't leave them much room for their remaining players.

The team already has seven defense listed and two goalies, so the concern will be up front. The Flames also managed to sign Jamie Lundmark, Jason Jaffray, Garth Murray and Brian McGrattan to new deals of late, which should manage to round out the line-up, in theory. Let's also not forget about Mikael Backlund, who will be making a push with his deal worth $1.3 million against the cap.

The Flames will have a different look to them, but we'll see how the chemistry works with Jokinen and Iginla.
