Stars Re-Sign Lehtinen

The Dallas Stars should have been pleased to announce that they brought back Jere Lehtinen to the fold for another season on Tuesday. Lehtinen, scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, signed a 1-year deal worth $1.5 million, keeping him in Dallas for yet another season.

Lehtinen, 36, has had some injury troubles over the past few seasons, which has really hampered his production values, moving down the rankings as the seasons go by. In 2009, he finished the season with only 48 games played and scoring 24 points (8 goals, 16 assists) in the process. When he is healthy, he is a good player for the team, especially on the defensive side, but fantasy-wise, his injury-prone status has now shifted him off of some lists.

At $1.5 million, the Stars do get somewhat of a bargain out of Lehtinen, especially if he figures in to play 70+ games. That would give him plenty of flexibility for next summer's free agency period. The Stars now have themselves 18 players signed on for next season at a going rate of nearly $42 million against the cap. That leaves plenty of room for a July 1st splash into the superstar market, if they so choose.
