Future Considerations

In a couple of deals on Friday, the first one (above) only led to the second one (below), which is a bit of a head scratcher, but it is the way it is. The first deal saw the Hurricanes acquire Derek Joslin from the Sharks, a prospect defenseman, who has been around the Sharks organization for quite some time and was finally starting to poke his head into the line-up from time to time. I have yet to see what the future considerations are, but it may just be related to something conditional to how well the Sharks do in the playoffs.

2012 2nd Round Draft Pick

The second deal of the day was arguably what everyone was waiting for, as Ian White has been on the block for the last couple of days, being held out of games and was also the feature of a wildfire rumour that had him sent to Vancouver a couple of days ago. White does indeed join the Sharks in his second deal of the season, the first being between the Flames and the Hurricanes.  The deal on Friday afternoon sees White go for the generalized asking price for a 3-4 defenseman over the past couple seasons, a 2nd round pick.

In White, the Sharks will add to their defensive depth with a solid two-way defenseman, who has had his troubles sticking with clubs over the past couple years.  The biggest reason why he has been moved so much is not that his play is unsatisfactory, per say, rather his deal $3 million cap hit has no clause against movement, so the cap hit can both be attractive and is his biggest downfall.  He should be a pretty good addition to the Sharks push into the playoffs, but likely not the "missing piece of the puzzle."

Salary CapThe Sharks cap situation is rather curious, as they have had a lot of players in and out of their line-up this year, so I would have to go over to CapGeek.com to see that they are now settled up to the salary cap ceiling in their cap calculations, likely helped along by the Joslin deal earlier.  Everything looks good for the Sharks going forward, but it does look like their last move, barring another major injury, with very little cap space to use down the stretch.

The Hurricanes are not out of the playoff race in the East, so they could still do something despite the trading of White away from the club.  White was just expendable and was going to get them a decent pick down the road.  In this deal, they have also dumped a little bit more cap space, so they could go out and acquire something that they could use.

ImplicationsIn the draft, White has now been dealt twice in the season and he belongs to Peter H. this season.  Going into Friday night's action, which hasn't been worked out in the aftermath of some deals quite yet, was sitting in 11th place in the final jersey race, 11 points out of 1st place, which is still manageable.  The trading of White to San Jose likely won't boost his chances though, not by himself anyways.
