Box 23 forward Steve Bernier has hit the waiver wire on Thursday, which looks like a possible fall-out between the player and the team, which could have some implications at the trade deadline for the Panthers. Bernier has struggled mightily this season in Florida, scoring only 5 goals and 9 assists in 48 games with the cats. I suppose it is anyone's guess whether or not this will be a move to drop him down to the minors indefinitely or try the re-entry waiver wire, since I don't see too many teams lining up for him at the moment.
Box 32 goalie in Tampa Bay, Mike Smith, has been placed on re-entry waivers from the AHL, this coming at the same time as the team acquiring Curtis McElhinney from the Ducks for Dan Ellis. I would imagine that Smith would get first crack at the back-up spot behind Dwayne Roloson, but I suppose that is all yet to be seen. Smith, at half price, may be attractive to a team or two, but goaltending situations are awfully sticky around the league at the moment.
