Since Box 28 defenseman Craig Rivet cleared waivers earlier this week, garnering no interest for his large salary cap hit for the rest of the season, the Sabres have then placed the veteran defender on re-entry waivers, hoping that he will picked up for half price for the rest of the season. There is some scuttlebutt out there that there might be some interest, but we won't know for sure until the 24-hour period is over.
The Blackhawks have decided to try and lop off a bit of salary cap space as well by placing Box 14 defenseman Nick Boynton on waivers, hoping that he might attract a suitor for taking his cap hit away. Boynton has been a regular healthy scratch for the Blackhawks and with the talent seemingly available through trade options, Boynton may not be very attractive, even for nothing.
Just a quick note in Tampa Bay, Mike Smith did clear re-entry waivers and has returned to the team from the AHL, but without moving Curtis McElhinney, it looks like the Lightning will carry three goalies for the time being. A curious situation to say the least, which could be explained by the possibility of yet another move, but who can be certain with only a few days until the deadline.
