An eye infection has landed Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin on the Injured Reserve, which should keep him on the shelf for at least a week, giving the reins to Devan Dubnyk for the time being and the team has also called up Martin Gerber to join the team as a back-up.
I don't think there is too much more to the infection story than what it is, a trip to the Injured Reserve has a minimum of a week on the shelf, so Gerber will get the call and maybe a call-up will make him interesting trade bait for the Oilers to possibly make another move.
Khabibulin has appeared in 39 games for the Oilers, picking up a record of 10-26-2 with 2 shutouts, giving him 24 points in the pool this year. The loss of Khabibulin will more likely be a loss of minutes played than anything else.
In the draft, Khabibulin has been dropped twice and picked up twice this season, with Larry D. holding onto him now. Larry has continued to struggle this season, now falling down to 15th place overall and is 19th in the third segment. It's all cosmetic, what happens to his team now.
