Pool Players on the Waiver Wire

The Buffalo Sabres announced on Wednesday that they have placed defenseman Craig Rivet on waivers, likely with the hope that someone would pick up Rivet for nothing to help them down the stretch. The 36-year old defender is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, but carries the balance of a $3.5 million cap hit for the rest of the year. He'll be a tough sell to many.

The Flyers, with the acquisition of Kris Versteeg, have no room for Nikolai Zherdev any longer and now the one-way (which isn't defense) winger will be hoping for a new home for the stretch run. Zherdev has a $2 million cap hit and is a restricted free agent in July, so he may be attractive, but his style of play may see him clear tomorrow. At that point, a trip to the minors is likely.
