Veteran defenseman, Darius Kasparitis, has been sent down to the Rangers' AHL affiliate in Hartford after clearing waivers on Tuesday. The Russian defender is on the last year of his contract and will likely not be re-signed by the Rangers next season, as he failed to make the big team this preseason. His $3.5 million contract won't count against the cap this season, but will count against the pocket book of the Rangers organization.
The race for the Top 6 defenders on the squad is still being contested with the winds of change knocking on the door. It's quite possible we'll see Marc Staal crack the line-up this season, but it hasn't been made public who might be on the way out to make room for the 3rd Staal brother in the NHL.
