In somewhat of a surprise move, the Sabres have suspended defenseman Teppo Numminen, in what is believed to be a cost-saving measure. The Sabres are hovering around the cap limit with Numminen in the line-up, but they will save the money they don't spend on him while he is suspended. Nummien's contract is worth $2.6 million, while the team with Numminen is hovering around $48.5 million.
Now the suspension doesn't have any bearing on how long Numminen will be out, in theory. Injuries can still count against the cap in the short-term, meaning under 10 games. If Numminen is scheduled to return in a period longer than 10 games after his heart surgery, I would think the suspension would be lifted. A keen eye on this situation might be the difference between taking this seasoned veteran or taking a chance on some young blood.
