Last Night's Notable Preseason Players (Sep 17)

Erik Cole had himself a pair of goals in the Hurricanes' 4-3 win over the Capitals, while Eric Staal had a good night with 3 assists. Defenseman, Noah Babin had an assist and was a +3 on the night.

The blue-chip prospect, Nicklas Backstrom, scored a goal in almost 16 minutes of ice-time for the Capitals in the loss mentioned above. That was Backstrom's debut in the new red, white and blue of the Capitals and should make a lasting impression this season.

Nashville goaltenders Pekka Rinne and Dan Ellis stopped 32 of 33 shots from Columbus to earn the win on Sunday night. Rinne has the inside track to take the back-up job behind Chris Mason, while Dan Ellis, who spent last year in Dallas' farm system, would like to find himself in the big league here in the coming year. Bet on Rinne to make it though, as he is considered the Predators' goalie of the future.

Ondrej Pavelec stopped 25 of 26 shots last night as the Thrashers beat the Blues 3-1. Pavelec will have a tough time beating out Johan Hedberg for the back-up job, but it looks like he'll put up a fight. Eric Perrin scored a pair of goals and looks to play another full season in the NHL, this season with Atlanta. Centre, Colin Stuart, had a goal and an assist in the game last night as well.

On the bright side for the Blues in the loss, Paul Kariya scored from Eric Brewer and Keith Tkachuk. It's good to have your names hit the scoresheet in the preseason. Otherwise, there wasn't much else to really speak of from the Blues.

New Coyote goaltender, David Aebischer, stopped 17 of 18 shots in his appearance for the Coyotes on Sunday night. The desert dogs would eventually beat the Ducks 2-1 in a shootout with youngster, Josh Tordjman getting the win.

The new goaltending tandem in Florida, Tomas Vokoun and Craig Anderson, combined for a 27 save shutout against the Flames on Sunday night. The Panthers may have themselves a solid tandem to take them through the season now. Olli Jokinen and Cory Murphy each had a goal and an assist in the win. The Panthers could finally be on the up-swing and should have some players in consideration for your pool team.
