Well, as of today, Scott Niedermayer is suspended for not showing up to training camp. Just a formality, in a sense, for the Ducks who now free up the cap space for the days that Niedermayer isn't being paid. Now that the Ducks have opened camp before heading off to London for their season opener, a player's contract is open to suspension if he doesn't report to training camp at the start date. I'm sure once Niedermayer decides to retire or not, the suspension will be lifted immediately to fulfill his wishes.
If Niedermayer chooses to come back in the season, only the days he's paid will count against the cap, but if he chooses to retire, that cap room will be freed permanently.
In the same release, GM Brian Burke had also mentioned a conversation with Teemu Selanne regarding his plans. He also doesn't know whether or not he'll come back or not. But since he's an Unrestricted Free Agent, there is no contract worry to think about for him.
Now that Niedermayer is now suspended, the Ducks salary figure is now sitting down at $41.3 million. With taking out Niedermayer, Joe DiPenta has been inserted into the 20-man roster.
