Injury Updates (Sep 18)

Training camp for Jon Gillies hasn't gotten off to the best start, as the 21-year old netminder for the Calgary Flames is now on the shelf, going through the NHL's concussion protocol.  Gillies was reportedly hurt in the Flames' last rookie game against the University of Calgary hockey team earlier in the week and he will be out for at least a week with the head injury.

Gillies is probably the number four goalkeeper on the Flames' depth chart at camp, but his upside is supposed to be the number one guy.  It doesn't appear that it will be the case right away for him though.

The New Jersey Devils were without their captain to start training camp on Friday, as Patrik Elias is hurting with a sore knee. There is no real timetable for his return to the ice for the team, nor are there any plans to have any tests done on the knee. The team is just hoping that rest will get him healthy again. It's all about wait and see.

Elias should still be a good pool worthy forward for the upcoming season, as he is projected upwards of 40 points this season.  He won't be nearly as effective, as he once was, but as a late round pick, he could be decent.

Scary moment at Red Wings camp on Friday, as Darren Helm and camp invitee Jerome Verrier were involved in an ugly collision. Helm suffered a concussion in the collision, whiler Verrier had to be rushed to surgery for a broken leg.

Helm will now go through the league protocol for concussions, which will cost him at least a week on the shelf, possibly more.  He will be re-evaluated in a week's time and likely some decisions will be made about the start of his season around then.
