Voynov Goes Home

One of the dark clouds that has hung over the Los Angeles Kings, defenseman Slava Voynov and his domestic abuse conviction, has pretty well come to its conclusion on Wednesday evening.

Voynov announced, through his agent, that he will return to Russia with his family, through self-deportation.  Voynov had served his sentence handed down to him this Summer and was going through the immigration processes with the US government, finally coming to this decision.

With this decision done, the Kings, who were looking to terminate his contract before training camp, will not have to do so, rather they will suspend him, without pay, for going home and that will take away his salary cap hit and paycheque.

If Voynov ever expressed interest in returning to the NHL and was approved to return through US Immigration, the Kings would still have his rights, but he would likely have to serve some kind of disciplinary action from the league, before playing.  It seems highly unlikely, but it could happen.
