2012 4th Round Draft Pick

The New Jersey Devils made a deal on Friday evening, acquiring Alex Ponikarovsky from the Carolina Hurricanes for prospect defenseman Joe Sova and a mid-round draft pick.

The Devils have picked up a little bit more depth up front, with a veteran forward that has scored 20 goals in a season a few times in his career, but hasn't done it in some time.  The Devils already suited Ponikarovsky up on Saturday afternoon, which isn't reflected in his numbers above, but he is on the team's third line to start his stint in the the swamp, one that will likely be a rental agreement, with the 31-year old Russian approaching unrestricted free agency in the Summer.

The Hurricanes appear to be in selling mode, sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference, going into Saturday's action and shifting a potential UFA is one of those trades that gives you a strong signal to say, "we're done."

ImplicationsNone. Ponikarovsky was not included on the selection sheet, he wasn't taken in the draft and with only 15 points to his name at the time of the deal, he likely won't figure into the second waiver draft, ranking 66th among available players for it.
