The disappointing year for Brian Gionta took another turn for the worst, as he had to undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn biceps muscle in his right arm and he will now be out of the Canadiens line-up indefinitely. Gionta suffered the injury on Tuesday night, having to leave the game against the St. Louis Blues in the 2nd period and wasn't able to return. Well, with this news of surgery, returning to the game was certainly an impossible feat.
Gionta has already missed some significant time from the Habs line-up this season, having only played in 31 games for the club, scoring 8 goals and 7 assists. It has been a pretty tough road in the 2012 season for himself and the rest of his teammates, as the Canadiens struggle to find a place in the top eight in the Eastern Conference and not having their captain around will be a struggle.
With Gionta down indefinitely and Pierre-Marc Bouchard out indefinitely, Derek W. has reason for concern about possibly making down to the basement of the draft standings again, but thankfully, he still has a 21-point gap to buffer himself, with a few extra players on his side, just to be on the safe side.
For the most part, Derek has had a fairly healthy season, being a shade above-average in skater games played this year, but unfortunately, the players that he has on his side have not been making the most of those games, as he ranks among the bottom in points per game played by his skaters at .506. That has to be the biggest concern.
