The Vegas Golden Knights surprised many, including myself, when they announced late on Tuesday night that Vadim Shipachyov and Shea Theodore were among three cuts on the night, also including training camp standout Alex Tuch, and sent them all down to the minors, mostly on the factor that none of them had to clear waivers to do so. The Golden Knights have a number of assets that they are likely still looking to trade, but the deals don't seem to be there at the moment and that has cost these three players some key NHL time in the early part of the 2018 season.
Shipachyov was my highest projected forward for this team and it comes as a pretty big surprise that the Golden Knights were not going to sacrifice someone through waivers to keep him up and Theodore was going to be a top end defender for this team, but it was a numbers game for him too.
The Russian veteran was a 9th round pick for Stacey M. and the Canadian defender was also taken in the 9th round by Kristy & Don. Both teams have the projected games for Week One taken down, but I can't imagine they'll be in the minors for too much longer.
