The Canucks remained in the middle of some of the action on Friday, signing a couple of forwards, Marco Sturm and Andrew Ebbett. Sturm, the higher profile of the two forwards, signed a 1-year deal, worth $2.25 million, while Ebbett signed a 1-year deal, worth $525,000.
Sturm split time in the 2011 season between the Capitals and the Kings, suffered a major knee injury in the pre-season, which cost the winger the first 32 games of the season, injured his knee again, missed another 13 games. In total, Sturm only played in 34 games, scored 5 goals and had 11 assists. When he is healthy, he is a pretty good player, but he is on the brink of having full injury prone status.
Ebbett played 33 games with the Coyotes in 2011, scoring 2 goals and added 3 assists. There is a pretty good chance that he will start the season in the minors, he certainly isn't a roster player during the Summer calculations.
With Sturm on the books, the Canucks now have 10 forwards, eight defensemen and two goalies on the books for a projected cap hit of $57.6 million. That should leave about $6.7 million of cap space open for two or three depth forwards, likely including Jannik Hansen in those figures.
